Health For Nigeria initiated the Nurse A School project in line with our mission to ensure that all Nigerian have access to basic primary healthcare services. The Nurse A School project aims to provide public schools around the country with a functioning sickbay and a registered Nurse to cater to the healthcare basic healthcare needs of students and staff of the school. The nurse would provide basic first aid and healthcare support through nearby Primary healthcare centers but beyond that the Nurse would also be responsible for health education, awareness, and literacy through the establishment of an interactive health club at each school.
What is Nurse A School?
The Nurse A School program is targeted at under-served schools in rural areas around Nigeria. Health For Nigeria recruits, trains, and deploys registered nurse (RN) fellows who will run clinics/sickbays in public schools, provide healthcare support services to students & staff.
The RNs would also work with the school to foster health education, health awareness, and health literacy by establishing interactive health clubs at schools that would be lead and run by the students and supported by the school nurse.
A major goal of this program is to foster a lifetime of health awareness and healthy habits in the students.
The nurses would also be key in the COVID19 response and recovery efforts in opening schools. They would be trained in the best COVID19 re-entry and re-education practices to be utilized in the schools.
Our step by step approach
Recruiting and selecting highly motivated young registered nurses to serve in public schools across Nigeria.
Operating a fellowship program that includes continuous mentorship and support of all healthcare activities in the schools.
Providing a healthcare leadership and management curriculum that all our Nurses would be required to complete as part of the program, alongside their clinical duties at the schools. The course is designed to develop their leadership and management capacity in the healthcare field.
Supporting health systems across all regions in Nigeria, lessening the burdens of over congestion, access to care and sub-standard health service.
